Vanadyl sulfate or Vanadium oxide sulphate, VOSO4 has IUPAC name Oxovanadium(2+) sulfate. Vanadyl sulphate is hygroscopic blue solid, common source of vanadium in the laboratory. It is an oxidative form of vanadium that in vitro and in animal models of diabetes has been shown to reduce hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. This hygroscopic blue solid is one of the most common sources of vanadium in the laboratory, reflecting its high stability. Vanadyl sulfate is only rarely found in nature. Vanadyl sulfate is a component of food supplements and experimental drugs. Vanadyl sulfate exhibits insulin-like effects. Vanadyl sulfate appears as a blue crystalline solid. Very soluble in water. Denser than water. Contact may irritate skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. May be toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption.
Vanadyl Sulfate is used as mordant in dyeing and printing textiles; manufacture of colored glass; for blue and green glazes on pottery; Mordant, catalyst etc.
